Beauty is so tied to youth in our society.
Our culture is filled with messages about women and aging—and all of them ride with the same myth: that we become less beautiful, less vital, less sexy with age.
Let’s be real; We all want to look beautiful at every age. But with such a limited definition of beauty, we leave out a lot of the amazing kind.
Beauty isn’t a constant—it’s always changing; that’s kind of the, well, beauty of it, right?
And certainly it doesn’t have just one definition, and how you choose to view and approach beauty as you age could make all the difference in Rocking a healthy skin as you age.
Aging Isn’t a Bad Thing
“As a beautician, I believe there are no rules about what defines beauty. I believe each age has its own beauty regardless of the number.”
And as such you don’t have to wish you were 30 because you can be 50 and still be fabulous.
Just focus on Finding the beauty at your age and try to look like the best possible version of yourself at this age—not necessarily young
Focusing on How to look the best at every new age is a much more realistic approach than looking in the mirror and hoping to see a much younger version of you.
And here are some ways I’ve learned to express this new approach to beauty.
Ignoring preexisting beauty stereotypes out there, like the woman-of-a-certain-age should wear short haircut, the expectation for modest makeup or putting on a bone straight or dyeing gray hair. I don’t let other people stereotype a certain beauty style for me.
“My beauty style is about maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, enjoying my career, spending more time with family and friends, building amazing relationship with my daughter and more importantly taking my Natural skincare regimen more serious and treating it as a marathon with immediate and long term benefits and not just as a sprint.
I consider these all part of my beauty regimen now, and I believe most of my friends feel the same way and we’re all having so much fun in our 40s!” all because we allowed ourselves to breathe a little more and be more comfortable with ourselves.
“My approach today is more holistic. Everything contributes to how I feel about beauty, from diet, Skincare and physical fitness to mental health, and I believe that comes from greater self-awareness of my body and the believe that I can still be beautiful and happy with my skin at any age.
Understand That What goes on also goes in
Your body absorbs what you put on your skin and the fact is you wouldn’t choose to eat chemicals, so why put them on your skin?
Once you stop avoiding using products with chemicals, you’ll soon realize the benefits of natural skin care. They’re safer. They're healthier.
Finally, a friend persuaded me to stop dying my hair and let the grey come in. It was the best decision I ever made. I know it took friends and family a bit to adjust to the grey hair, but I really like it. I no longer have that "shabby brunette" look that I did when I was dying my hair regularly. I know it's important to get a good haircut and keep it up; that's how I keep my grey looking its best. My neighbor, who is nine years older than I looked at my hair one day and complimented me on it. I believe she is rethinking the whole "grey hair makes you look old" idea.
Honestly, it feels good to be this age.
The world is harsh enough on women... we need to be extra sweet and nice to ourselves.
