At Neutriherbs, we often say how you feel on the inside determines how you look on the outside.
When a woman is lit up, feeling good about herself, embracing who she is and how she looks—it shows. More than any product, any makeup technique, any fashion choice or hairstyle—the #1 thing that makes a woman look beautiful is how beautiful she feels.
But sometimes “feeling beautiful” doesn’t come so easily and caring for our appearance in a confident way goes a long way to making us feel beautiful.
Here are four key psychological tips that will help you gain the confidence needed to feel beautiful at any age:
1) Going Gray: Doesn't Mean Letting Yourself Go
Many women assume that letting their natural hair color show is synonymous with letting themselves go. They associate the "Gray” with loss of control, aging, becoming their mothers and grandmothers. An expression of resignation.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Going gray with confidence and pride (hey, we worked hard for this!) is what makes it appear attractive.
Instead of feeling out of control, take control by making gray a choice.
Make an appointment with a hair stylist and find out how to make the most of natural gray, how to embellish it and style it to provide a positive boost to your image.
Some women say their natural hair feels shinier, healthier and more vibrant as they stop regularly treating it with color dyes. They not only like the time and money it saves them, but they also enjoy feeling more connected to their authentic selves. This all doesn't sound exactly like letting yourself go, does it? Learn how to go gray in a way that suits you and your lifestyle. It just may be a choice worth making.
2. Remind yourself of what you love about yourself.
There are a million ways to do this. You can hang up post. Write in your journal. Or just take a moment to think or say something nice about yourself when you look in a mirror!
Try focusing on the qualities you love about yourself. Maybe it’s your leadership ability, your love for those around you, your amazing ability to multitask, your sense of humor, your endurance, or your strength. Take a few seconds to remember those things from time to time.
Even if I don’t feel “beautiful” on any given day, I notice that if I focus on other positive qualities about myself—whatever feels accessible!—I feel and look better overall.
3. Cosmetics at Midlife: Less is More
Wearing too much makeup, or using it to cover-up fine lines often less attractive than investing in natural skincare that enhances your natural looks as you age.
In short, less is more when it comes to cosmetics. We need to accept that our looks change, rather than deny or avoid these changes we need to enhance them in such a way that highlights and brings out our natural beauty at that phase of life.
Once you understand that beauty keeps changing and every new decade comes with it’s own kind of beauty then you’ll be more receptive to learning how to highlight features rather than hide them using makeup.
Add moisture and color to lips that may be dry and thinning. Darken eyebrows that have lightened and need shaping; these are smart ways to use makeup.
Experiment with lighter foundations. Try more subtle shades of eye shadow or use lip gloss with just a bit of color, rather than bold lipstick like your grandmother wore.
The point of cosmetics at this stage of life is not to conceal but reveal.
Have confidence to use less makeup and more natural skincare to bring out the best version of you at every age is key.
4. Practice kindness.
That might seem like an unusual idea—what does kindness have todo with looking beautiful? But you have to admit: kindness feels great.
It’s incredibly reliable. I find that no matter how crummy I’m feeling, how tired or stressed out, doing anything kind for another person lifts the weight off my shoulders, brightens my mood and makes me feel great.
And when I see that kindness reflected back in the other person’s gratitude or surprise, it’s even better!
Even something as simple as giving up your seat on the train can make you feel great. See what happens if you look for little opportunities through out the day to practice kindness.
It’ll make you glow from the inside—and you’ll feel more beautiful as a result.
Remember, the most important thing to any of these tips is the confidence and pride you bring to them. A bright smile, straight posture and engaging eyes never have to change with age.
Even when you’ve got a lot more to do than spend an hour getting dressed, it’s possible to bring a little playfulness to the day. Sometimes that one bright splash of color or fun piece of jewelry can transform the way we feel!
